Offering
The 2+2 Program in Interdisciplinary Studies is a unique partnership between Columbia State Community College and Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). You can earn a Bachelor of Science degree that prepares you to receive certification to teach kindergarten through sixth grade.
Students in the 2+2 Program must first complete an Associate of Science Degree from Columbia State specifically designed for this. The junior and senior years are completed by enrolling in a specific sequence of upper-division courses offered by MTSU on the Columbia State campus.
The Associate of
Science Degree in Education from Columbia State Community College is
designed for those students seeking a transfer degree to other Tennessee
Board of Regents colleges and universities.
EDU 201 Introduction to Education (3)
A survey of the field which includes the history and
major philosophies of education, issues in schooling, and career options in
education. Students are required to complete a 12-hour field study in an
approved classroom.
EDU 221 Educational Psychology (3)
A study and application of the principles of growth and
development, learning theory, and assessment techniques in the classroom
setting. Students are required to complete a six-hour field study in an
approved classroom.
EDU 225 Educational Technology for Teachers (3)
This course is designed for students pursuing a career in
education, 21st century classroom training, teachers who are novice users of
the current technology found in most 21st century classrooms, and current
teachers who want to improve their knowledge of how to use technology in the
classroom. Additional lab work required.
EDU 222 Introduction to the Exceptional Child

This course is designed to increase the student’s understanding of
the psychology and education of the exceptional child. This course
is not a methodology course, but will provide an overview of the
range of exceptional characteristics that exist and the effects of
these on learning. The physical, mental, emotional, behavioral and
social traits of children and adolescents will be discussed.
Students will gain an understanding of pertinent federal and state
legislation (Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, Section
504 of the Rehabilitation Act) by which some children and
adolescents are considered exceptional and identified as such. Other
topics will include legal issues, giftedness
(identification/classification/labeling), as well as diversity of
culture and language.
